but let me say specifically about susan rice, she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. as i said before, she made an appearance at the request of the white house in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. and i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous. and you know, we're after an election now. i think it is important for us to find out exactly what happened in benghazi and i'm happy to cooperate in any ways that congress wants. we have provided every bit of information that we have. and we will continue to provide information and we have got a full blown investigation. and all that in

susan rice was -- you look at the context. we're in a presidential election, and susan rice was using talking points altered potentially by the white house and that took the words, you know, that took the terrorist group attacks out of those talking points meaning that there could have been a coverup and we're trying to get to the bottom of it. if she took out that phrase, that would be a huge problem for confirmation. >> jason, what do you think it is like to be susan rice these days? >> i think it is very difficult. look, barack obama has not always had an easy time pushing his nominees through, but think about it. not only is she in the middle of this benghazi scandal and people are going to be questioning whether she was honest or a show for the white house but you're following hillary clinton who has been one of the most popular and well-respected secretaries of state that we have had in the last 20 years. i think susan rice is in a difficult position and i am pretty sure john kerry is thinking this is my chance so i thin

that is susan rice, the u.n. ambassador for the united states, for taking the position had she leaves of hillary clinton as secretary of state. and that name, susan rice, has been bandied about for quite a long time, but now, you know, the drumbeat is increasing and secretary clinton, remember, has said she will leave at the end of the term, that would mean january, but she's also indicated that she might stick around until the president is able to replace her and that would mean, of course, that the president would have to nominate someone and that person would a have to get through the senate. that's where the plot thickens because susan rice, as we all know, is part of this unfolding saga about benghazi and the attack that killed the u.s. ambassador and other americans in libya. so she has been blamed a lot, of course, for coming out and saying that those attacks, that attack was spurred by a video and then later on the administration said that it was terrorism. that could set her up for some really tough time

ambassador susan rice who has gotten a lot of heat since then in the days after the attack. let's listen. >> our current best assessment based on the information that we have at present is that, in fact, what this began as was a spontaneous, no the a premeditated response to of what had transpired in cairo. >> so how did that happen? how was that accurate at the time? if we know that this was in fact a premeditated, not spontaneous occurrence? >> well, we don't know the degree it was premeditated. that's still something that's under investigation. how much advance planning was there or was this planned within 24 hours or the same day. so that's a question we still have to the get to the bottom of, but the important point in terms of the ambassador's statement on that sunday talk program is she was using the intelligence community's best estimate. at that time when she appeared on the sunday talk shows, the intelligence community still believed that that began as a protest, that, yes, there were terrorists and extremists involved, but that it began as a protest. so i don't se

susan rice going to be secretary of state, that could be a very ugly confirmation hearing. and senator john kerry talked about as defense secretary, wolf? >> yeah, there's been reports that john kerry, who i always assumed wanted to be secretary of state could be the next secretary of defense leon panetta has made it clear he's ready to move on and go back to california after all these years in washington, former cia director, now the secretary of defense. i don't know how long that will last. but if kerry is nominated to be the secretary of defense, that does leave hillary clinton's job at the state department open. and susan rice was always -- at least i always believed she was the front-runner until those controversial comments she made about the benghazi killing of the u.s. ambassador and three other americans on those five sunday talk shows. and the republicans really have been going after her. and if the president stands firm and nominates her to be the next secretary of state, it will be a bruising confirmation hearing, there's no doubt about that. my p sense is, he

does the president have confidence -- i know he's a big fan of ambassador susan rice -- does he have confidence she could pass a national confirmation for any post in a future cabinet? >> i will not engage in speculation of personnel matters. the president believes secretary rice has done an excellent job and is grateful for his service. >> this investigation has been going on for month. how is it that the white house didn't have any idea of this until the day after the election and congress a few days later? >> i refer you to the fbi. they have as i understand it, protocols in place for when they notify the legislative and executive branchs of the investigations. and you know, it is simply a fact that the white house was not aware of the situation regarding general patreaus until wednesday and the situation regarding general allen until friday. so, you know, the fbi's a place to guy in terms of explanation of the protocols they follow. i understand that is the answer that they will give, that there are protocols they follow that govern how they inform the various branchs of governme
